Answers to some of our Frequently Asked Questions

What is a pitch?

The pitch is your opportunity to succinctly convey your business idea and its value to judges, within a 3 minute time window.

Does everyone have to pitch?

In the first instance you need only to complete your online application form responses. The applications are then evaluated, with the top applicants being selected to go on and pitch at the Semi-finals. If successful in the Semi-finals, then you will be invited to pitch at the Finals.

Is it hard to enter (Registration of Interest)?
Entry is easy. The first step is to complete the online Registration of Interest form.

Registration of Interest forms are available until 5pm AEST 11 October 2018.
What happens after I register my interest?

If you are deemed eligible, you will then be sent a full online Application Form with further details about the competition.

You have until 5pm AEST 12 October 2018 to complete the full online Application Form.

There are assessment questions in the application and these will be evaluated. The highest scoring candidates will then be selected to progress and pitch their idea to a panel of 3 judges at the Semi-finals.

Am I eligible?
The competition is open for anyone aged 18 and over within the Western Downs with an innovative business idea. Please refer to the Terms and Conditions on our website for specific eligibility criteria.
I have an idea but it’s not yet a business – can I still apply?

Absolutely. Your idea will be assessed for its business potential, value and viability.

What should I cover in my 3 minute pitch?

If selected to pitch at the Semi-finals (or onward) you will be provided with a pitch guide in advance which gives a suggested framework and assessment criteria. You will also be provided with an online pitch training video to help frame your ideas and focus your thinking.

What are the key dates and locations for the competition?
Registrations close 5pm AEST Thursday 11 October 2018.

Applications close 5pm AEST Friday 12 October 2018.

Semi-finals will be held at the Chinchilla RSL on Tuesday 13 October 2018.

Finals will be held at the Chinchilla Cultural Centre on Thursday 29 November 2018.
What dates do I need to be available for?

If you are selected to participate in the Semi-final you need to be available to pitch from 9am onwards on Tuesday 13 November 2018 at the Chinchilla RSL.

If you are selected to participate in the Final you need to be available from 9am onwards on Thursday 29 November 2018 at the Chinchilla Cultural Centre.

This includes your attendance at the evening Awards event.

Optional training will be available to candidates during the course of the Competition. Details to be confirmed.

Do I have to pay for my own travel, accommodation and other associated costs if I am selected as a contestant, semi-finalist and/or finalist?

If you are selected to participate in the Competition, Semi-final and/or the Final Event (each an Event), you must meet all your costs of attending the Event and pitching your idea.

Who are the judges?

The judges are impartial and recognised specialists.

Can anyone attend the Event Finals?
On the evening of 29 November 2018, we will be holding a Finals Award Ceremony.
The finalists will deliver their pitches to the audience and the winners of each category will be announced.

The night will be a wonderful celebration of innovation and entrepreneurship in the Western Downs and everyone is welcome.

What can I do if I am not selected to proceed as a candidate at any point during the process?

Irrespective of the outcome, your details will be entered on to the Business Navigator Western Downs system. In the event that we find potential areas of interest to you in the future, we may contact you accordingly.
